●解説
何でもいいから、好きにしろ。人にたいする無関心を示す表現だ。
たとえば、相手がせっかく"Nice to meet you."と言ってきたのに
"Whatever." と答えれば「ふん、知るかよ、勝手に言ってろ」と
なりとても失礼なことになる。
だから、レストランで「何にする?」
と聞かれたら、"Whatever." とは言わずに、
"I'd like (to have) a glass of beer."
とか言えば、感じがいいだろう。
●英語による定義と例文
★ used as a reply to tell someone that you do not care
(about) what they say or ask:
相手の発言または尋ねることに関心がないという事を伝える返答
として用いられる
★"someone"を受けるのに"he or she"の代わりに"they"もよく使わ
れる。これは誤用ではない。
☆"Do you want sausage or tomato on your pizza?" "Whatever."
「ピザの具はソーセージ、それともトマト？」「どうでもいいよ」
☆"She seems to hate you. I don't know why." "Whatever."
「彼女お前のこと嫌いみたいだ。何でかな」「知るか」

●文法の解説
☆what they say or ask
whatは先行詞と関係代名詞を兼ねる複合関係代名詞。「〜すること、
または〜するもの」と考えればよい。whatの後には主語と動詞を持っ
て来ればよい。この用法のローリングストーンズの有名な曲のタイト
ルを紹介しよう。日本語のタイトルは「無情の世界」。"not always"
は部分否定であることに注意。
☆You cannot always get what you want.
いつでも自分のほしいものが手に入るとは限らない。

押し売りを断るのに最も効果的な表現。覚えておくと何かと便利。

他人のことなんか気にせず、マイペースでやりたいときに言うと、
迫力があってかっこいい。

おせっかいなやつに言うといいよ。
(d) None of your business.
これも同じだね。

pick up 選ぶ、車で迎えに行く
attend (他動詞)出席する。 "go to"より硬い言葉。
suit 色やデザインなどが似合っている。"fit"はサイズが
ぴったり合っている。
●文法の解説
☆helpは原型不定詞(toを伴わない不定詞)を用いることが多い。
☆yes or no で答えられない質問の場合は文に挿入する。
次の2文を比較するとよい。

★体を磨いて!?
ヒロミ：Give me a rub.これはどういう意味でしょうか？「体を磨いて」と
いうことでしょうか？ちょっと痛いような気がするのですが。"rub"には
「こする」という意味はあるのですが「もむ」という意味はないと思います。
ビーチ：英和辞典にはあまり載ってないようだけど、"rub"には「磨く、こ
する」以外に「もむ」という基本的な意味があるよ。特に、名詞として使え
ば分かりやすいね。例文を下に示しておくから参考にしてね。
☆Give me a good back rub.
肩(背中)を十分マッサージしてね。
☆Will you rub my shoulders. They are a bit stiff.
肩をもんでくれない? 少し凝ってるの。
☆I could really use your sweet rub on my stiff neck.
首(肩)が凝っているんだ。君が優しくマッサージしてくれたら
本当にありがたいよ。

◆他動詞と自動詞
◆Transitive Verb and Intransitive Verb
英語の文型を決定する際の基本要素は次の4つである。
1．主語 Subject
2．動詞 Verb
3．目的語 Object
4．補語 Complement
動詞を二つに大別する時目的語を必要とする動詞を他動詞、必要と
しない動詞を自動詞という。英語で書くとこうなる。
1. Transitive Verb 他動詞
2. Intransitive Verb 自動詞
talk about youのyouはtalkの目的語ではなく、前置詞aboutの目的
語である。従って、talkは自動詞である。talkとabout二つ合わせて
一つの他動詞と見ることもできるが、この考え方は学校文法では認め
られていない。なぜなら、今までの5文型の体系が崩れるからだ。
しかし、実際にはいろいろと便利である。たとえば学校文法でも受動
態のセクションでは句動詞を他動詞として扱うと書いてある。
ただし、文型を判断する時は他動詞として扱うことができないと主張
する。私たちとしては柔軟な思考で対処すればよい。続きは次回に。
